Obituary of Dr. Ligia Caino-Torres

Dr. Ligia Ciano-Torres, age 93, of Vineland, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 15, 2024. She was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, where she spent her early years before moving to Washington, D.C., to attend Georgetown University, where she studied Pre-Med. Ligia later continued her medical studies at the University of Madrid in Spain, where she completed her medical degree and became an OB-GYN.

During her college years, Ligia reconnected with her childhood friend, the late Dr. Francisco J. Torres Zayas, MD, and they began dating. They married and started their family in Puerto Rico, welcoming their first two children, Francisco Torres and Juan Carlos Torres. Eventually, the family moved to New Jersey, where Ligia began her esteemed career at the Vineland Developmental Center. They later welcomed two more children, Alberto Torres and Fernando Torres. Ligia served the Vineland community for 26 years, retiring as Chief of Staff of the hospital in 1992.

Throughout her life, Ligia was deeply committed to her work as a physician, but her love for her family was unparalleled. She cherished spending time with her sons, her nine grandchildren, and her two great-grandchildren. Ligia found joy in attending plays, going to the movies, reading her favorite novels, and dining out with her family and friends. Her favorite dish was Chicken Parmesan. Ligia's greatest joy was always being surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her son Francisco Torres, her late son Carlos Torres (Jennifer Torres), her son Alberto Torres (Tracy Torres), and her son Fernando Torres (Erika Torres). She also leaves behind many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous friends who adored her.

A celebration of Ligia's life will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 10:00 AM at DeMarco-Luisi Funeral Home, 2755 S. Lincoln Ave, Vineland, NJ 08361. The family will receive visitors from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with a reflection of life to follow, during which those who wish to speak and share memories are welcome.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Jefferson Hospital ICMU of Washington Township and to all family and friends who have provided support during this difficult time.
