My wife, Anne, and I knew Steve and Joan as neighbors on Jackson Drive, in Vineland. I spent 11 years working with Steve in the NJARNG 3/102 Armor Battalion.
Chief Tobolski always encouraged me to take the next step up in learning and leadership. After about two years I remember him "suggesting" that I leave my armor crew position to take a slot in the HQ intelligence section. NOT what I wanted to do since my first love was the tanks! But as usual he was right. His guidance led me to learn many different skills as I advanced in rank, eventually reaching SFC, E-7, platoon sergeant and as an acting company first sergeant.
He was father, mother and mentor to generations of both enlisted and commissioned personnel. In all the time I knew him, Chief Tobolski never raised his voice in anger to anyone. But when he spoke you listened! He would always take the time to answer any question, help with any problem and celebrate any success of those he knew. My life and the lives of the many people who knew him will always be blessed by our memories of him.

To John, Stephanie, Jo Anne and wife Joan. My wife and I want to send you our deepest sympathy and sincere condolences in the passing of Big Steve. I have so many fond memeories of growing up being a child of the GANG, and all of the picnics we attended for many years. I remember the softball games and watching my dad, Uncle Steve, Twit and Uncle Vince playing pinochle. Those times I will never forget. Uncle Steve was a good man and he will never be fogotten by me. May God rest his soul and may his memories be a blessing to your family and to all who knew him!!!
Sincerely and with love,
Danny and Marife DiGiovacchino

Q: How did you meet Steve?
A: I met Mr. Tobolski (Chief Warrant Officer) during my 6 years in the National Guard in Vineland. I spent most of my time in his personnel section working directly with him at all drills and at Camp Drum each year. He was the consummate professional and a true leader. I enjoyed his sense of humor and have fond memories of our time together. Special thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I first met Steve when I was hired in 1972 as an Administrative Supply Technician for the 3d Battalion 102D Army National Guard in Vineland. Steve was the full time Battalion Personal Officer who literally showed me "the ropes" and along with Danny Tabor mentored and taught me the job. I truly owe Steve more than I can ever repay for starting me on my military career of 30+ years. There was not a better teacher, a kinder and more caring individual than Steve Tobolski, and though it has been many years since I left the area, how very fortunate I was to have had the opportunity to serve and soldier with Steve in the Army National Guard in Vineland.
