There are many amazing memories with cousin Jerry, some of which started when I was quite young. Back then, during Christmas break, mom would take Adam and me around to see all the great aunts and uncles and some of the cousins. Some years, that'd be the only time I'd see him. But then we started attending the Super Bowl parties, and wow was that quite the thing! After I got my drivers license, I started taking Katie with me to the GANJA horse shows. In all of those moments, I remember him being positive, smiling, always looking for the bright spot, and I enjoyed every minute when I got to talk to him.
Fast forward too many years, as I barely saw anyone while we lived in Colorado, but after the move to Virginia I started making regular treks up to NJ. I loved being able to spend time catching up with them, especially when at the Amari Homestead. There are so many wonderful memories of Jerry walking me around the garden, the house before and after remodel, and the other structures... and of course I absolutely had to admire those pear trees and the ancient fig. I loved talking to him and Dawn - and again the uplifting spirit he had stood out. Out of all of those treasured visits, my favorite is when I was there at Christmas at the same time Mike, Katie, and their spouses, and Judy and Albert were as well. I arrived as they were playing a game called "The Voting." Now, anyone who knows me, knows I'm no one for sitting and playing card or board games very often. But this game had me hooked, as did the time with everyone gathered. To this day, I don't think I've laughed as hard nor smiled as much as I did that night. I now own that game, by the way.
My last visit there was shortly before I moved to Tennessee, and it was a peaceful visit spent mostly outside and enjoying the homestead and the amazing meal - some of which were made with the bounty from his garden. Jerry had me laughing but also had me contemplating serious topics. We touched on some deep moments that evening. If only we'd known that, just months apart, we'd both be fighting for our lives against cancer.
Cousin Jerry will forever be in my heart for his smile, positivity, kindness, and generosity. H's helped me learn to focus more on the good things, no matter how small.
