Obituary of Leonard R. Block

Leonard R. Block, Jr., 89 of Millville passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Bishop McCarthy Residence, Vineland. Leonard was born in Passaic, NJ, on Aug. 26, 1926, and grew up in North Jersey. He joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific during WWII as a signalman on an LCI. He married his beloved wife Anna Birkner on Nov. 9, 1946, after being discharged from the Navy. They were married for 65 years and had one daughter, Linda. In 1963 the family moved to Millville. Leonard was employed in the textile industry as a salesman for the Standard Bleachery and then supervisor of the wet end of the finishing and dyeing portion of the business for Millville Manufacturing and Wilmington Finishing. He retired in 1988. He enjoyed traveling through New England and Virginia with his beloved wife, as well as driving through the surrounding areas of South Jersey. He loved telling stories, joking with friends and relatives, talking about his days in the Navy, and painting. He will be sadly missed by his daughter Linda (Block) Szynal and husband Frank, brother Leslie of Connecticut, and nephew Frank Birkner III, as well as several other nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. He is predeceased by his loving wife Anna, parents Leonard Sr. and Sarah, and brother Raymond. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1pm at DeMarco-Luisi Funeral Home 2755 S. Lincoln Ave., Vineland. Leonard will be laid to rest at Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery, Bridgeton, NJ. Family and friends will be received on Friday from 11am to 1pm at the funeral home.
