Coach Hutch was more to the Stockton University men's basketball team than just an assistant coach. He was someone the guys could go to for a laugh if they were down or advice when they were having trouble either in school or in life. He was one of those guys that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He was always positive and I can honestly say I never saw him in a bad mood. Hutch was a perfect example of the old quote "When life gives you lemons, you take them and make lemonade" because that's exactly what he did. Hutch looked at the positives no matter what life threw at him even when what was going on would have broke someone else. My thoughts and prayers are with the Hutchings family in this time of grief.

1st time meeting coach hutch he was 17 rows in an empty gym watch one of our college practices.
After practice our head coach introduced him as a new assistant coach.
When practice was done I told him welcome to the team & had to ask why he was sitting so far away,
he said, “ I wanted a Birds Eye view of the team. “.
The guy had a million quirks like this about him that you loved.
Love you Coach Hutch. RIP

I just wanted to let Hutch’s family know that the his service was a beautiful tribute to him and his life. I don’t even want to call it a funeral. It was a celebration of his life and the impact Hutch had on every life he touched. May. God grant you His peace as you remember the husband, father, coach, and wonderful man that he was.

Time, distance, and various “everyday” obligations and concerns sometimes present challenges for many folks to fully appreciate their long-established high school friends’ personal and professional lifetime achievements and contributions to family and community throughout the many years since graduation. That’s why the well-written tributes regarding “Hutch” are so valuable -- enhancing our ability to more fully grasp the details of his love for family, friends, basketball, and life in general. Ryan said it best in a Facebook communication to his Dad that expressed a profound account of Hutch’s passion, enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment to develop and maintain strong and consequential relationships throughout his life. What a legacy he leaves to be emulated.
Over the years, although our contacts were much more limited than “back in the day,” it was always a treasure having “Hutch” join our informal high school and college “Annual” gatherings at Thanksgiving and other special occasions, when he could, to reminisce with our alumni group, celebrating our lasting relationships, and checking on everyone’s health and reminiscing of bygone days. Those “get-togethers” have always resulted in immense laughter, embellished storylines, and most important, a genuine, enhanced camaraderie cherished by all.
On a more personal note, over the past few years, our family had the opportunity to “hook up” with Hutch at the NCAA Final Four Division I Basketball Championships in San Antonio in 2018 and again last year in New Orleans. “Hutch being Hutch,” he acquired our tickets for the Championship game between Kansas and North Carolina and we sat with him throughout the game, receiving the benefit of his superior game analysis. His coaching fervor and expertise were unmistakably on display, leading to a night we will not will soon forget and we continue to be appreciative for his kindness and friendship.
To Janet, Ryan, Robert, and Hutch’s entire extended family, please accept our condolences and prayers for peace in your hearts during these very trying times. Hutch, may you rest in peace forever. It was our privilege to call you our friend.

Annapolis, Maryland

Q: How would you describe Robert to someone who had never met them?
A: Hutch was always in a good mood, he always had a comment of quick wit, a great joke, and his wonderful smile and laugh to follow. He would always ask me at games "we need you Ollie"......

1st my deepest condolences to the Hutchings family. I remember meeting Hutch for the 1st time as a freshman at BHS. Our freshman basketball games were held in the old YMCA. Hutch started attending the games and we later found out he was going to be the new head coach starting the 1981-1982 season. Thus, the ride began. I wish I had the time to speak on all the great moments we had with Hutch, but there are just too many. Basketball was his passion, but he cared about his players even more. He will never be forgotten.
Sincerely, Josh Thompson Sr. #30

I met Hutch when his boys joined Boy Scout Troop 4. He recruited me to work as an Official in NJSIAA Track & Field and Cross Country. Hutch was always prepared and often brought bottles of water and granola bars for the other officials. Although, he was a starter, he often would assign others to be the starter so they could earn a little extra money. His vehicle had several different uniforms, a dress shirt on a hanger and different jackets in it for the other responsibilities he shouldered as well as athletic bags specific to the sports he was involved in. It was like a rolling closet. I was very honored to call him my friend and highly honored that he invited me to attend his induction to the South Jersey All Sports Hall of Fame in Bridgeton. Once when my car broke down on the way to the Bridgeton Relays, I called Hutch. Even though he was already at the meet, he drove back and picked me up. After the meet, he took me back and waited with me until the tow truck arrived. His kindness had no boundaries. Hutch was always fun to be with. I miss him already. Track won't be the same without him.
