I was one of l u i s' s colonoscopy patients him Scott Cooper Mills Robbins and the team always made me comfortable when you scene l u i s in the hallway always there to greet you like you were the long lost friend he always was happy to see very cordial heartwarming and friendly just the best person all the way around and became good friends with all three of you I had the most in common with him because of our grooming we always shared notes laughed and joked amongst each other and he asked about what I was doing with my life the man really cared about me and you could tell it showed in every action he took right down to when he put his hand on my head and he said you're going to feel a warm sensation they're going to put you to sleep now so we can do the procedure and each time that he did it I felt comfortable going to sleep cuz I knew I was going to wake up in his competent care the man was just terrific as a person as a practitioner and as a human being I know God has you in the palm of his hand sir I was proud to be your friend here on Earth and I will see you again in heaven love you brother with all my heart! You will be sorely missed but never forgotten! You're the embodiment of what all people should try to be as a nurse in the VA! I know they issued you wings when you got there because you're a true Angel brother! And I hope that you're passing was easy and your burden was light as you ascended into the good hands of God! I am happy I got to share one Christmas with you and the team it meant the world to me the gift of your friendship will never be forgotten the best part of you will live in my heart forever! As I said once to you we are so tight we might as well been Brothers not just friends because that's how I thought of you and always will! Your family has a lot to be proud of in you; as you have done right by every veteran you ever met especially this one your friend now and always love you miss you!!!

TRIBUTE TO LUIS FIGUEROA
BY DR KENNETH MILLS-ROBERTSON, 12/29/23
Luis was my brother and friend, my wingman at work. He worked in Wilmington Veterans Administration Hospital Gastroenterology (GI) Department for 22 years. So, did I.
On Day 1 at work, we became friends, drawn to each other as if by fate, a spiritual connection which allowed us to support each other for 22 years, working together in one place until we were torn apart by illness a year ago.
Luis was an excellent medical technician and relentlessly supportive of our work. He was meticulous and no GI bleeding was ever too tough to subdue, and no colon polyp ever escaped his watchful eye. Our motto was “No man ever has to die with a colon full of polyps”.
He had a great sense of humor too, brightening each of our days as a team in the GI lab. We laughed at each other’s many jokes. Earlier in our work we shared a joke about Boston Baked Beans which is also a riddle: I asked, “Why is it that each can of Boston Baked Beans, big or small, has exactly 239 beans?” Luis solved this hilarious riddle. He said with a smile: “one more bean and it would be too farty...” He then, naughtily, persuaded me to use the riddle as a right-of-passage when welcoming new staff into our GI lab, which we did.
In the midst of our camaraderie, he asked me never to retire, that even when I got to 90 years old, he would be there to hold the scope with me… Interestingly, Luis will never grow old from now on as we the living relentlessly go over the hill. Luis will never have wrinkles. His handsome face will remain as is...
My family also got to know him well. All of them talked about him fondly. At their birthdays, he and the members of the GI choir, which we christened “Royal Fecolith Quartet”, would serenade them over the phone with “Happy birthday in G major” wherever they were and that was very special.
That was my Luis, my brother and my Amigo.
Adios Amigo. Travel safely till we meet again on that beautiful shore.
Amen

One of the best staff members I ever worked with, as a helper on clinical care and as employee when I was the Boss, will miss him a lot.
