Mom was one of 10 children raised on an active cash crop farm. She grew up in a tough love environment due to the needs of the farm and 9 other siblings. It was only natural that she would raise her sons the only way she knew how. As young boys, my brother and I would race our bikes through the hills and trails in the woods and undeveloped lots in our neighborhood. We would ride for hours no matter how hot a summer day it was. When tired out, we went home sweating and exhausted. I remember telling Mom, “I think I have a fever”. Before electronic gadgets, Mom would take our temps with just the back of her hand on the forehead. Her clinical assessment would lead her to say “Get your bed pillow and lay on the couch for a while. I don’t know how many families were fortunate to have a magic healing couch, however. We did and made regular use of it.
Being the adventure seekers we were, my brother and I were always looking for a challenge. We grew up close to our neighborhood elementary school. The playground included a huge hill that delivery trucks would deliver cafeteria supplies. On weekdays after teachers left or on weekends I would tie the radio flyer wagon to my bicycle and tow it to the school. Once at the top of the hill I would untie it and with great anticipation, board the wagon and attempt to slalom down the pavement hill without faltering. It never happened but we tried over and over again. We would depart the school with ripped jeans, bloody knees, elbows and palms, while still talking about doing it again the next day. Arriving at home, Mom would give us the lecture that, “You kids are going to drive me crazy or break your necks!” No matter the speech, she would quickly clean and bandage our wounds and patch our war wounded jeans. Never once did she try to stifle our adventurous hearts, always giving us the confidence to go on to our next adventure.
As an adult I’d think back to those days and realize Mom never stifled our curiosity, never pampered us unnecessarily. She taught us to explore, challenge ourselves, be brave and take the world head on. It was that hard love and allowance to experience and discover our abilities that made me strong and confident in life. I didn’t get the chance to thank Mom for teaching me that I could do anything I set my mind to. So, thank you Mom, without your allowing me to face challenges, take risks, explore and experience life and the world around me, I would never have challenged myself to do more and be more. For this and so many lessons learned, thank you Mom. I love you and miss you!
